Early Goals Get Knights Past Griffins

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (3/26/2022) - Gwynedd Mercy University (2-5) returned to the GMercyU Athletic Complex for the first time in a month to host Arcadia University (4-3) in this afternoon's contest. And nor wind, nor rain, nor hail, took away from the competition on the turf as a 6-2 (2:07) Knight first quarter gave the visitors the early advantage and an eventual 14-7 victory. The Griffins slowed down Arcadia University in the second quarter, breaking up two more Knight scores (14:42, 6:06) with a man-up connection between sophomore midfielders GianLuca Lockhart (Turnersville, N.J.) and Justin Carney (Flemington, N.J.) (5:08); 7-3. The Knights pushed their lead to seven scores, 10-3, with 9:34 remaining in the third quarter and an even exchange of goals from there to the final buzzer left the final in their favor; 14-7 (4:03).

Gwynedd Mercy University shared the ball well as nine different Griffins recorded at least a point in the seven-goal game. Worth mention were the Griffins' first (1-1, 12:15 1QTR) and second-to-last tallies (13-6, 8:38 4QTR); the first saw senior goalkeeper Aubron Swartley (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) find sophomore attack Jason Eide (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) with a long clear, while the penultimate saw senior defenseman Brendan Donovan (Fort Bragg, N.C.) put the Arcadia University goalkeeper out of position and find sophomore midfielder Tyler Long (Downingtown, Pa.) for an empty netter. Long led the Griffins with two goals. He also recovered a ground ball. Eide (goal, assist, 4 ground balls) and Lockhart (goal, assist, 3 ground balls) also recorded two points apiece and combined for seven ground balls. Donovan added four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers to his helper. Swartley's (2-3) first career assist came with 22 saves and six ground balls.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to the GMercyU Athletic Complex on Wednesday, March 30, when they host Susquehanna University for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
