Griffins Battle, But Come Up Short To Moravian In Season Opener

Setley Joins Exclusive All-Time Points Club

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy made their 2021 season debut but were on the wrong side of an 18-13 decision to visiting Moravian in the opener for both teams on Monday.

Kohler Setley paced the Griffins by tying a single-game program record with eight points on six goals and two assists. More importantly, his sixth and final goal gave the senior 100 career points, as he becomes just the seventh player in team history to hit the century mark. His unassisted tally with just 15 seconds remaining gave him the milestone.

Defensively, Ryan Boyd collected five caused turnovers in the contest to tie a single-game school record. It is the fifth all-time occasion for the feat.

The Greyhounds were led by Cade Siddron, who led all scorers with 10 points (five goals/five assists). Moravian, which led 15-12 leading into the final quarter, limited the Griffin offense to one late goal. Griffin LeBlond tallied six goals and teammate Connor James added four scores for the visitors.

Two quick Moravian goals to open the game put GMercyU in an early hole. After a Greyhound penalty, the Griffins cashed in on the man-up as John McCreary potted a goal get the team on the board.

After two goals from Setley later in the quarter to give Gwynedd a 4-3 lead, Moravian scored twice in the final 17 seconds of the first quarter to go back on top. The Greyhound held an 11-9 edge at halftime.

Gwynedd pulled within two goals in the tail end of the third, but again, LeBlond scored a late tally for a 15-12 contest heading into the final quarter. In that final frame, three-straight goals from the visitors helped open up their largest lead of the game. Setley capped the scoring with his career milestone.

McCreary finished with four goals, to tie a personal best. Jason Eide (two goals) and Lucas Gray also scored for GMercyU.

Goalie Aubron Swartley recorded three saves before he had to exit the game in the second quarter due to injury. Chase McFeeley came on and registered five stops. Moravian keeper Sean DeMott made 12 stops.

The team won the groundball battle, 27-24, led by a career-high seven from Philip Weis. Weis also notched three caused turnovers.

Gwynedd Mercy resumes action on Saturday when they welcome Montclair State in a 1 p.m. start.
