Game Preview

February 28, 2020

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy will play at Wesley to decide the Atlantic East Tournament Championship on Saturday at Wesley's Wentworth Gymnasium in Dover, Delaware with a 2 p.m. start.

The second-seeded Griffins took down Marymount, 87-83, in Thursday's semifinal while the Wolverines defeated Immaculata, 85-75, to set up Saturday's showdown.
Gwynedd captured the Atlantic East Title in its inaugural season last year and is looking to defend its championship. The Wolverines are making their first appearance after last season's loss to the Griffins in the semifinal round.

The two teams split their regular-season meetings with each winning on their home floor. On January 29th, Wesley handed Gwynedd their first AEC loss in a 76-73 score in Dover. Their second meeting took place last Saturday in the season finale here at The Griffin Complex where GMercyU posted a 97-94 victory.

Rich Dunham continues to lead the Griffins as his game-high 23 points on Thursday made him the team's leading scorer in 19 of their 26 games so far this season. Austin Harriott (9.3 ppg/6.6 rpg), Somah Slewion (8.7 ppg/1.4 apg), Donaven Spencer (7.8 ppg/6.4 rpg), and Nathaniel Walker (7.2 ppg/2.0 apg) round out a starting five that owns the second-best scoring defense and third-best scoring offense in the Atlantic East.

The Wolverines are led by Brian Cameron who ranks third in all of Division III in scoring 28.9 points a game. Greg Bloodsworth (16.5 ppg) and Mychal Stefanides (11.3 ppg) average in double figures as part of the conference's top scoring offense.

With the Atlantic East Conference Men's Basketball champion not eligible for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament until the 2020-21 season, Saturday's winner can be in line for a Pool B bid into the big dance. Pool B bids are designated for schools that are independents or in a conference that does not have an automatic bid. Pairings for the Division III Tournament will be announced on Monday, March 2nd.
