GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy Women's Basketball Team will play at Cabrini on Wednesday night in the semifinal round of the 2020 Atlantic East Tournament starting at 7 p.m.
The third-seeded Griffins took down #6 Neumann on Monday, 97-81, behind four players in double figures, led by
Tamia Wessels with 20 points. The second-seeded Cavaliers earned a first-round bye. Tonight's other semifinal pits #5 Marywood at top-seeded Marymount. Tonight's winners clash on Saturday in the Atlantic East Championship Game.
In their first meeting this season back on January 15th, Cabrini posted a 104-77 decision in Radnor. The two teams met again here at The Griffin Complex on February 8th where the Griffins held an eight-point lead late in the third quarter, but a rough fourth frame was key to the Cavaliers' 107-88 win.
The Griffins and Cavaliers are no strangers to meeting each other when it comes to postseason play. Tonight will be the 11th all-time playoff meeting with Cabrini holding a 7-3 record, however, the Griffins won the last matchup, a 67-49 victory in the 2017 Colonial States Athletic Conference Title Game.
Gwynedd features seven players that average almost over seven points a game as the team is still ranked as the top scoring offense in Division III and third overall in all divisions. In 26 games, the Griffins average 32 opponent turnovers with 28 points coming off those turnovers while adding 19 steals a game (which ranks them second in DIII). Individually, Wessels leads the team in scoring (11.0 ppg) while
Chyanne Fine leads in rebounding (6.1 rpg) and
Tolu Omole in assists (3.7 apg).
For the Cavaliers, who enter tonight's game having a three-game win streak snapped with a 61-58 home loss to Immaculata in the regular season finale last Saturday, are led by Ashley Tutzauer (15.1 ppg) and Kate Lannon (13.0 ppg) who are ranked fifth and sixth respectively in the Atlantic East in scoring. Megan Matthews is the top rebounder (7.5 rpg) with teammate Cassidy Gallagher averaging just under three assists per contest.
