GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy hosts Neumann in a first-round game of the 2020 Atlantic East Women's Basketball Tournament Monday night at The Griffin Complex starting at 7 p.m.
The Griffins have won their last three and have gone 8-2 over their final 10 games to help them lock up the #3 seed. The Knights clinched the #6 seed as they closed out the regular season with a win at Marywood on Wednesday.
In their two season meetings, Gwynedd Mercy swept the series, winning at home, 96-66, back on January 22nd and in Aston on February 15th by the score of 110-89.
This will be the ninth playoff meeting between the two with the Griffins holding a 5-3 record and their first since 2018 postseason where the Knights knocked off Gwynedd in the semifinals of the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament.
Statistically, Gwynedd owns the top scoring offense in Division III (89.2 ppg) and the third highest in all of the NCAA. The team is also ranked second in DIII in steals per game (18.9 spg), rebounding offense (23.8 rpg), and turnover margin (+13.75). Individually,
Tolu Omole leads the Atlantic East in assists (88) and assists per game (3.5 apg). She is also one of four Griffins (
Elise Sylvester,
Jill Kane, and
Tamia Wessels) in the top six in steals per game. Five or more players average over nine points with three others averaging over five rebounds a game.
Shayla Green leads Neumann in scoring (12.6 ppg) with Terea Hunt averaging 11 points and six rebounds. Teammate Chelsea Keebler leads the Atlantic East with 59 three-pointers made, but their offense ranks them fifth in the conference (57.4 ppg).
Monday's other first-round action has #5 Marywood at #4 Immaculata. #1 Marymount and #2 Cabrini have byes and will await the winners in Wednesday's semifinal. The Atlantic East Championship takes place on Saturday, February 29th at the highest seed remaining.
