Widener Upends Men's Lacrosse In Season Opener

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy had their 2020 season opener soured by Widener as the Griffins fell to the Pride, 16-4, on a chilly Saturday afternoon. It was the first matchup between the two schools.

John McCreary, Jacob Dzierzgowski, Derek Alcavage, and Luke Xanthopoulos all netted goals for GMercyU. Freshman goalie Chase McFeeley recorded 11 saves in his collegiate debut.

For the Pride, Chad Allison scored five times, with Paz Gismondi adding three scores and three assists. Connor Heisman added two goals and three helpers while Kyle Groark added a pair of tallies.

Widener got out to a 3-0 lead in the first before McCreary put Gwynedd on the board on a man-up goal with an assist from Kohler Setley. Xanthopoulos opened the second on an end-to-end rush to make it a 4-2 contest, but the Pride put together three-straight to open up a sizable advantage. Widener led 9-3 at the half.

Xanthopoulos and Nick Heiler each grabbed three groundballs while Ryan Boyd added a pair of caused turnovers.

Carter Landry recorded nine saves through three and a half quarters for Widener with teammate Andrew Spencer notching two stops.

Gwynedd Mercy returns to action next weekend when they travel to Western Pennsylvania for a pair of games in the Three Rivers Classic. On Saturday, they'll face Westminster before a date with Chatham on Sunday.
