Griffins Split Home Tri-Match

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy had their 2019 home opener on Saturday in a tri-match with King's and Penn State-Brandywine where the Griffins went 1-1 on the day.

In the morning's first match, GMercyU fell 3-1 to King's (25-21,21-25,25-21,25-19), but rebounded to end the day with a sweep of Brandywine (25-11, 25-12, 25-8). The middle match saw the Monarchs down the Nittany Lions, 3-0.

In the match with King's, both teams had over 47 kills apiece. After falling in the first set, the Griffins took the second before the Monarchs pulled away late for a win in the third set. In the fourth, Gwynedd looked to rally in the latter stages, turning a seven-point deficit to just two (20-18), but King's won five of the next six points to close out the match. After registering double-digit kills in the first three sets, the team was just 5-11-47 in the fourth.

Madelyn Mosser recorded a team-high 11 kills and three service aces. Bridget McTamney notched her fifth-straight double double (37 assists/15 digs) and added an ace and solo block. Cait Saalfrank had top dig honors, totaling a second-best program record of 43. She holds the mark of 44, which she set last season.

Jessica Schreiber and Julianne Dove each kicked in seven kills for the Griffins.

Marta Pawka led the Monarchs with a match-high 15 enders along with 10 digs. She joined Grace Frati (10 kills/24 digs) as one of two players with a double double.

Frati continued the hot hand, racking up 11 kills in the 25-12, 25-16, 25-17 win over Brandywine in the day's second match.

Gwynedd Mercy had just six hitting errors against the Nittany Lions, as the team hit just under .300 for the match (31-6-84). Mosser again hit double figures in kills (11) as GMercyU led from start to finish in all three sets.

Liz Schule, who had eight kills against King's, totaled the same amount vs. Brandywine. The senior also added five aces.

The homestand continues on Tuesday when Delaware Valley visits in a 7 p.m. start.
