Men's Soccer Battles Brandywine To A 1-1 Draw

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- After 110 minutes, Gwynedd Mercy and Penn State-Brandywine played to a 1-1 draw on a rainy Friday afternoon.

The Griffins struck first in the 26th minute when Tyler Bascone scored his first goal of the season and career. After a free kick just inside the PSU half that sailed into the box, Bascone was able to get a good header on the bouncing ball for the 1-0 lead.

Soon after the goal, Gwynedd had to play a man down due a red card but was able to keep the one-goal lead to the half.

In the 62nd minute, the Lions were able to tie things up. A hand ball in the box awarded a penalty kick to Brandywine where Axel Ayllon-Ortiz was able to get one by goalie Tyler Blair to make it 1-1.

Later in the stanza, Mike Czajka almost made it 2-1 but his blast from 20 yards out on a broken play skipped off the crossbar.

Blair rebounded to make three of his five saves on the day in that second half.

In the first overtime, Gwynedd came out firing, getting two good looks early on from Hugh Lynch and Evan Kirby. Later Brandywine was called for a red card, evening the sides at 10 men apiece. The teams battled the rest of the way but could not find the golden goal.

Juan Guerro recorded two saves for Brandywine (1-1-1).

GMercyU will have to rest up quickly as they return to action tomorrow when they welcome Ursinus in a noon start.
