GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy powered its way to a 3-1 win over visiting Goucher Friday night. Set scores were 25-15, 18-25, 25-21, and 25-22.

The win evens their record on the season at 7-7 while the Gophers go to 6-6.

The Griffins hit 32-24-184 on the night, but used 11 aces, six blocks and took advantage of 38 attack errors by Goucher.

Liz Schule and Madelyn Mosser each had eight kills to lead GMercyU. Setter Bridget McTamney put together a nice evening, totaling 25 assists, 24 digs, four aces, two kills, and a solo block. Cait Saalfrank also served up four aces as the libero collected a match-high 33 digs.

Emily Sorrells led the Gophers with 12 kills but also had 12 attack errors.

McTamney got the match off on a hot start, serving up three aces as part of an 8-0 run to open the first set. Goucher would later get it to 10-8 and then 17-14. But six-straight attack errors by the Gophers helped put the Griffins up by nine (23-14). Back-to-back kills from Layne Morgan and Mosser put Gwynedd up after the first.

The second set saw Goucher build an early lead as an ace gave them an 11-5 lead. Later on a double block from the duo of Mosser and Morgan pulled the Griffins to 17-15. Goucher scored the final four points in a 25-18 score to even things at 1-1.

After an early Griffin lead in the third, the Gophers came back to take a 14-12 advantage, forcing a Gwynedd timeout. The lead swung back for good in the Griffins' favor thanks to four points in a row. Schule finished off the set with a kill and a 2-1 lead.

Goucher did not go quietly in the fourth, as the teams had eight ties and four lead changes. A 10-6 deficit became a 13-8 hole before Gwynedd chipped at the lead. Four-straight Griffin points knotted the game a 16-16. Back-to-back kills from Mosser put the squad up 19-18 to force a Gopher timeout. GMercyU put the game on ice, outscoring Goucher 6-3 to wrap it up.

The team travels to Bryn Mawr tomorrow in a noon start.
