LANGHORNE, PA. -- The record book was rewritten on Saturday as Gwynedd Mercy split a pair of matches in a tri-match at Cairn.
Junior
Cait Saalfrank became the program's all-time dig leader in the first game against Albright. Need nine to break the old mark of 1286, she would hit the mark in the first set. Combining with the day's second match vs the host Highlanders, Saalfrank now currently sits at 1325 digs in 65 career matches.
The Griffins battled the Lions to five sets in the first match of the day, but Gwynedd couldn't rally in the deciding set to fall, 3-2 (23-25,25-12,19-25,25-14,15-11). GMercyU would rebound with a 3-0 sweep of Cairn (25-15,26-24,25-15) to salvage the split.
Against Albright the trio of
Liz Schule,
Madelyn Mosser, and
Jessica Schreiber combined for 29 of the team's 40 kills, led by Schule with 12.
Saalfrank totaled 29 digs and three aces, both team highs.
GMercyU got out to a 14-6 in set one before holding off a late Lion charge for a narrow 25-23 win. The team produced just six kills in seeing a 2-2 tie turn into a 15-3 deficit they couldn't respond from in set two. In the third set, Gwynedd led 20-19 then ran off five-straight points to go up 2-1. Albright used a 12-4 start in the fourth to go on and force a fifth and deciding set.
In that final set, the Lions got out to a 6-1 lead, then later a 12-4. The Griffins pulled to 14-8 and notched three points in a row but saw Albright close it out.
Grace Andrefski led the Lions with a match-high 17 kills.
In the match with the host Highlanders, the Griffins breezed through the first set before a battle in the second. The teams had 16 ties and eight lead changes with no team leading by more than three points. Faced with set point at 24-23, Gwynedd rallied after a timeout to notch three points in a row for a 26-24 win.
The team would use a 6-0 run in the middle of the third to take a 13-9 lead and hold that advantage the rest of the way to cement the outcome.
Mosser again hit double digits in kills with 12. Saalfrank and
Ashley Morris registered 18 and 12 digs each respectively. The team hit an impressive .210 for the match (33-11-105).
