Men's Lacrosse Nabs Overtime Conference Win

ARLINGTON, VA. -- A goal from Kohler Setley just 48 seconds into overtime helped Gwynedd Mercy capture their first Atlantic East Conference victory in an 11-10 victory at Marymount Wednesday night.

The Griffins got goals from seven different players led by Nick Freda with a career-high three, but the team saw the Saints erase a 10-6 Gwynedd lead to force the extra session.

First quarter goals form Freda and Ryan Simpson helped GMercyU out to a 2-1 lead. In the second, Jordan Dzierzgowski scored twice, including his fourth man-up goal on the season, but Marymount wouldn't go away. Clark Akers added a pair of scores late in the period to get the Saints to 6-4 at halftime.

Ryan Simpson scored his 17th career man-up goal in the third, to move him into a tie for first-place on the all-time school record book. Freda's third tally of the day came with 4:27 remaining in the third, giving Gwynedd a 10-6 advantage.

Akers scored three of the next four goals for Marymount, with the final one coming with 3:13 in the fourth to tie things up at 10-10. After trading possessions, Gwynedd goalie Aubron Swartley came up with two big saves on the Saints' final one before the end of regulation.

In overtime, Joey Giordano won the faceoff and gave GMercyU the first possession and the Griffins cashed in as Setley gave Gwynedd its third overtime win this season.

Swartley finished with six saves while Marymount keeper Grey Clarkson recorded 12.

Akers finished with five goals and an assist for the Saints.

The team returns to action a week from today when they head to Neumann in a conference battle.
