READING, PA. --
Ryan Simpson's goal in the third overtime lifted Gwynedd Mercy past Albright, 11-10, in Wednesday evening.
Simpson netted three goals, with his final tally of the game coming with 1:23 left in the third extra session, making it the longest game in program history. The total time of 70:37 bests the previous mark of 68:27, which also was a three overtime win for Gwynedd at King's back on March 20th, 2010. This is his second game-winning overtime goal this season after he did it at Lycoming last month.
Goalie
Aubron Swartley notched 10 saves including a huge stop with seconds remaining in the second overtime.
Kohler Setley finished career highs of four goals and five points.
Jordan Dzierzgowski (2),
Joseph Pandolfi, and
Zach Groses also scored for GMercyU who saw the Lions rally back from a 10-4 deficit in the fourth quarter.
Joey Giordano picked up a personal-best 14 groundballs while going 17-of-23 on faceoffs.
Leading 5-2 after the first, the Griffins found their touch in the second, potting four-straight to end the half, including a pair of man-up goals from Dzierzgowski and Setley in the final 3:46 of the period. Now leading 9-4 heading into the final frame, Setley struck early to make it a six-goal edge.
The Lions had 10 shots in the fourth as they slowly crept back into the contest. Albright scored twice in the final two minutes, including the eventual game-tying tally with 1:10 to play.
After each team recorded one shot apiece in the first overtime, Gwynedd put together four shots in a possession but could not find paydirt. After a turnover in their defensive half late in the frame, Swartley stoned Albright's Cole Genneken at point blank range to send it to a third extra session.
In the third OT, the Griffins gained possession after an Albright turnover where Simpson ended it with his team leading 19th goal on the season. The goal also moves him into a tie for first place with nine career game-winning goals.
The team resumes action on Saturday when they head to DeSales. The game will be a fundraiser for Out of the Darkness, a part of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
