DOVER, DE. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Basketball team fell on the road Saturday at Wesley College 86-83, in an Atlantic East Conference contest.
Despite the loss, the Griffins still hold their fate, as a win in the regular season finale next weekend against Marywood will decide the top seed in the upcoming Atlantic East Conference Tournament.
Gwynedd was led by
Clayton Wolfe with a team-high 18 points.
Courtney Cubbage (16),
Rich Dunham (14) and
Jeff Seigafuse (13) rounded out the leading scorers for the visitors.
Wesley was led by Brian Cameron with a game-high 31 points, the Wolverines also connected on 32-of-44 free throws on the afternoon.
The Griffins found themselves in an early 14-5 hole to open up the first half. Wesley continued to grow their lead to fifteen (22-7) halfway through the stanza. A Cubbage lay-up would see Gwynedd down 34-16 at the 5:13 mark.
GMercyU started to get hot to close out the first with a pair of three pointers from
Jaylen Henry and a triple from Wolfe with nine seconds left to cut the lead to 10 (43-33) at the halftime break.
A Cubbage jumper would cut the lead to seven (52-45) in the opening moments on the second half. Staying within reach,
Matt Sommers connected on a three midway through the period gnawing the deficit to 67-62 with 9:44 remaining.
Dunham's triple tied things up at 73-73 at the 5:15 mark before the Wolverines answered to retake the lead and stretch it to seven with just over two minutes remaining. The Griffins forced a turnover and capitalized with Sommers' third triple of the day to make it a one-point contest with twenty eight seconds left. Wesley would make a pair of free throws to go back up by three. GMercyU had a late look but were unable to connect in falling by three points.
The Griffins will now host Marywood on Saturday at 3 p.m. Prior to the game, the Griffins will honor their senior class.
