GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Basketball team secured the #1 playoff seed and home-court advantage throughout the Atlantic East Conference Tournament with a 74-69 victory over Marywood University on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
Prior to the game, the Griffins honored three seniors
Courtney Cubbage,
Matt Sommers and
Clayton Wolfe. Coach Baron also recognized senior manager Chris Wood for all of his help throughout his four years with the team.
Cubbage would lead all scorers posting a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Rich Dunham added 15 as GMercyU erased a 17-point first half deficit.
The Griffins found themselves with an early deficit trailing 26-9 midway through the first half. A Cubbage slam would spark a 21-3 Griffin run to close out the half. A pair of Dunham free throws would cut the lead to eight (31-23) with just over five minutes remaining. Cubbage would cut the lead to two, but Marywood would respond with a three pointer to go back up five (34-29). Gwynedd closed out the half on a six point swing thanks to a Dunham triple, Cubbage free throw and a pair of
Jordan Perkins free throws for a 35-34 halftime lead.
Marywood took their last lead of the game at 45-43 with 14:19 remaining in the game.
Somah Slewion would connect on a three pointer to but Gwynedd up for good leading 46-45.
Sommers would stretch the lead to five (54-49) with a triple with just over eleven minutes remaining.
The Pacers would cut the lead to two (63-61) but the Griffins would answer with an 10-2 run over the next two minutes to give themselves their largest lead of the game (73-63) with a Dunham fast break layup with just over a minute remaining.
Slewion would seal the game at the free throw line with just eighteen seconds remaining for the 74-69 victory.
Tone Cockrell led Marywood with a team high 20 points.
The Griffins will return back to action on Wednesday when they host lowest remaining seed from Monday's winners here at The Griffin Complex at 7 p.m. Marywood will be the second seed followed by (3) Marymount, (4) Wesley, (5) Cabrini and (6) Immaculata.
