IMMACULATA, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Basketball team stayed atop the Atlantic East Conference standings with an 80-71 victory at Immaculata University on Wednesday evening. The victory also gives GMercyU a season sweep over the Mighty Macs.
Clayton Wolfe (23),
Rich Dunham (22) and
Courtney Cubbage (14) all paced the Griffins with double-digit scoring efforts.
Trailing early 14-6, Gwynedd bounced back with a 9-0 scoring run thanks to the trio of leading scorers capped by a Dunham triple for a 21-16 lead with just under eight minutes remaining.
Immaculata would retake the lead 33-26, but the Griffins responded with a pair of three pointers from Wolfe and Dunham for a 34-33 lead to close out the half on an eight-point swing.
Despite holding the halftime edge, the Griffins found themselves trailing throughout the second half. However with the game tied at 56-56, GMercyU made their move as Dunham would connect on a layup and three pointer to put Gwynedd ahead 61-56 with just under seven minutes remaining.
A Wolfe triple with 5:54 remaining extended the lead to eight (67-59).Â
Immaculata would get as close as six, but the Griffins put the game away at the free throw line, connecting on (20-24) free throws for the game, including a 6-for-8 effort in the final five minutes. Gwynedd would take their largest lead of thirteen (77-64) with 1:37 on the clock.
For the game, GMercyU shot 26-of-55 (47.3%) for the 80-71 victory and held the glass out-rebounding the Mighty Macs, 35-32 with a quartet of Griffins (Cubbage, Dunham,
Jordan Perkins and
Matt Sommers) grabbing five each.
Immaculata was led by Brandon McCullough with 20 points.
The Griffins return back to action on Saturday traveling to Wesley College at 3 p.m.
