WILLIAMSPORT, PA. --
Ryan Simpson scored four goals, including the overtime winner on the man-up to help lift Gwynedd Mercy to an 8-7 win at Lycoming on Saturday.
Simpson netted two of his tallies in the fourth quarter while
Zach Groses,
Ryan Gartenmayer,
Kohler Setley, and
Jacob Dzierzgowski also netted goals for GMercyU (2-0). Dzierzgowski also dished out a game-high three assists. He and
Philip Weis each dug up four groundballs apiece.
Goalie
Aubron Swartley recorded 18 saves including five in the final quarter. Lycoming keeper Michael Tenant made 11 stops.
Tied 2-2 after the first, the Warriors scored the only goal in the second to take a 3-2 lead into halftime. Two late scores from Dzierzgowski and Groses in the third rallied Gwynedd from in a 6-3 deficit to a one-goal game heading into the final 15 minutes.
After a slashing penalty put the Griffins on the man up midway in the fourth, Simpson cashed in, tying the contest at 6-6 with nine minutes to play. His unassisted goal just under two minutes later gave GMercyU a lead.
Lycoming's Andrew Ream scored the second of his two goals on the day with only 1:57 remaining in regulation to knot things up at 7-7.
Joey Giordano won the crucial faceoff to start the extra session, where the possession led to a penalty on Lycoming. Dzierzgowski fed Simpson for the game winner just 1:03 into overtime. Giordano won 7 of his 11 faceoffs on the day while adding a pair of groundballs.
The team resumes action on Wednesday at Bryn Athyn in a 4 p.m. start.
