GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy got their 2019 season underway with a 9-7 win over Drew Saturday afternoon. In the process,
Ryan Simpson hit a career milestone, notching his 100th career point. The senior scored twice to give him exactly 100 points on the dot. He becomes the sixth player in program history to hit the century mark.
Jacob Dzierzgowski and
Jordan Dzierzgowski totaled five of the team's nine goals on the day. Jacob netted a game-high three with Joran adding two. The squad built a 7-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter and was able to hold off a late Ranger push to win their season opener.
Kohler Setley and
Zach Groses also scored for the Griffins. Groses also dished out two assists.
Freshman goalie
Aubron Swartley made four saves in his debut. Nate Sanders recorded 16 saves for Drew.
After the Rangers tied it up at 2-2 early in the second quarter, GMercyU ran off four straight, with the final tally coming from Simpson for his milestone point with 38 seconds before halftime.
Nick Heiler won 14-of-19 faceoffs in the circle while
Shawn Ryan and
Anthony Pozsonyi each added two caused turnovers. Simpson was tops on the team in groundballs with five.
The team resumes action on Wednesday with a matchup at Haverford.
