Men's Hoops Takes Down Host Cardinals In Consolation Game

2019 York College Invitational

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Led by a team-high 16 points from Nathaniel Walker, Gwynedd Mercy downed the host York College Cardinals, 72-69, in the consolation game of the York Invitational on Saturday.

For his efforts, Walker was named the all-tournament team after he averaged 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in a pair of games this weekend.

The Griffins, which led by as much as 13 in the first half and 11 at halftime, held off a late push from the Cardinals, thanks to big free throws from Rich Dunham and Manny Clark in the game's final seconds.

In that first half, GMercyU shot 44% from the floor and connected on seven three pointers. Back-to-back bombs from Matt Carter helped ignite a 10-0 run midway in the first 20 minutes to give Gwynedd a 27-13 lead.

York used a 12-2 spurt in the second to pull within 48-45 with 13 minutes to play, but the Griffins fought to stay ahead. Jordan Perkins' three-point play with just over six minutes remaining gave Gwynedd a nine-point edge and looked to help pull away for good.

Devine Chisolm scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half, aiding the Cardinals in their last push. His layup with 20 ticks left tied the game (69-69) for the first time since early in the contest. On the ensuing possession, Dunham was fouled and sent to the free-throw line where he hit one of two. Gwynedd forced a turnover to get the ball back where Clark hit both of his attempts at the line for a three-point lead. York did not get off a final shot before the final buzzer.

Dunham and Carter each finished with eight points while Clark netted seven points. Perkins snared a team-high seven boards while adding seven points.

The team now heads to Miami, Florida to partake in the HoopMIA D3 Holiday Shootout. On Tuesday, the team squares off with Cortland followed by a game against Wesleyan on Wednesday.
