Volleyball Wins Wild One At Wesley

DOVER, DE. -- Down two sets to one, Gwynedd Mercy forced a fifth and deciding set where they outlasted Wesley, 3-2, for their first Atlantic East Conference win on the season. Set scores were 25-17, 15-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-10.

The team reached season highs in kills (50) and digs (145) in five-set contests as the squad hit .133 (50-20-225).

In that fifth and final set, Gwynedd was a perfect 8-0-35 with three kills each from Kerry McGlinn and Madelyn Mosser. Leading 6-2 after a monster kill from Mosser, the Wolverines rallied to make it a 10-7 contest. Liz Schule ended the wild matchup with a kill to give the Griffins their first AEC conference win in program history.

Mosser finished with a team-high 15 kills. McGlynn and Schule each added nine while Jessica Schreiber added a personal-best eight. McGlynn also hit a career high in digs with 31. Setter Bridget McTamney produced a double double with 40 assists (a season high) and 22 digs.

GMercyU opened up a 15-14 in the first set, using an 8-1 spurt. Back-to-back kills from Mosser helped cement the set and a 1-0 lead. In the second, Wesley returned the favor, as a 13-3 run close out the set knotted things up at 1-1.

The Wolverines ran out to a 14-3 lead in the third but Gwynedd hung around, and hung around, and hung around to make things interesting. Now down 22-12, the Griffins got it to 23-18 to force a Wesley timeout. However, two kills from Emily Waldridge moved the match to the fourth set.

Gwynedd trailed the entire fourth set, only falling behind by as much four points. Mosser's ace finally tied the score at 20-20. The teams traded points to get to 23-23 before a kill from Schule and a Wesley attack error completed the comeback and force that fifth set.

Waldridge led the Wolverines with 16 kills. She was one of four players, joining Mary Getty (12), regan Healey (11), and Mackenzie Bender (10) to reach double-digit kills.

The team is off until next Wednesday when they return to the confines of The Griffin Complex for an AEC tilt with Cabrini starting at 6 p.m.
