Griffins Come Up Short At Marywood

SCRANTON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy was handed a 3-1 Atlantic East Conference defeat at Marywood on Saturday.

The Griffins now must defeat Immaculata to secure a playoff seed. That match will take place at The Griffin Complex on Tuesday on Senior Night.

Gwynedd had four players with six or more kills but none in double figures. Madelyn Mosser (8) led the way. Lanye Morgan added seven and Liz Schule and Kaylee Craig with six respectively.

Cait Saalfrank totaled 30 digs as she was one of three players in double digits. Setter Bridget McTamney chipped in 12 digs and 25 assists for her 18th double double on the season. Ashley Morris kicked in 11 for her ninth match in double figures.

For McTamney, her 25 assists moves her into third place on the all-time list, passing current teammate Kerry McGlinn. The sophomore now has 1239 assists in 184 sets.

The first set saw both teams total 10 or more digs each as they stood neck-and-neck throughout. Mosser's kill made it a 17-15 contest in favor of the Pacers, but they would notch four-straight points to give them their largest lead of the set. In the second, Gwynedd couldn't get their feet under them early, falling behind 10-5. The Griffins pulled it to 11-8 but saw Marywood pull away to go up 2-0.

The third had GMercyU totaling 12 kills, led by Mosser and Craig who had three each. Trailing 8-7, the team ran off a 7-2 spurt that would put them in the lead for good. Marywood could not any closer than five points as the match moved on to the fourth set. The Pacers came out firing in that fourth set, racking up 20 kills as an early 6-0 run broke open a 5-5 game.

Peri Sheerin led all attackers with 20 kills. Nicole Cashman (12) and Ashley King (11) also reached double figures.
