Griffins Clinch Playoff Berth On Senior Night

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy punched its ticket to the postseason for the first time in 12 years as the Griffins took down Immaculata, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-23), Tuesday evening on Senior Night.

GMercyU needed a win in its last regular-season game to cement a playoff berth for the first time since 2007 when they were members of the old Pennsylvania Athletic Conference.

Seedings and pairings will not be finalized until this weekend, but the Griffins have clinched the #5 seed and will play next Tuesday at the #4 seed. The top six teams in the Atlantic East Conference earn bids with the top two seeds have a first-round bye.

Prior to tonight's match, the team and coaching staff took time to honor their three seniors: Natalie Danze, Kerry McGlinn, and Liz Schule.

Schule was among the many who shined on the night, totaling nine kills and four service aces. Her nine enders moved her into fifth place in the all-time record books and her four aces put her in a tie for third place in program history. Danze added four digs and a pair of aces while McGlinn was unfortunately out with an injury.

Kaylee Craig kicked in a season-high eight kills while libero Cait Saalfrank chipped in 21 digs, three aces, and a pair of kills. Jessica Schreiber contributed six kills as the Griffins hit .172 (36-15-122) in the three-set victory.

Natalie Dependahl led the Mighty Macs with a match-high 10 kills as Immaculata produced a 41-13-123 (.228) hitting line on the night.

After winning the first two sets, the third provided the most drama of the night. A total of 12 ties and seven lead changes took place, as the Mighty Macs were also fighting for a win and a playoff spot of their own. Three kills in a row from Aly Lowe gave IU and early 6-3 lead, but the Griffins came roaring back thanks to a 6-2 spurt. The set featured scoring runs by both teams, as Immaculata came back to take a 14-11 edge to force a Gwynedd timeout. Now tied at 22-22, the Griffins got it to match point before a kill from Hughes pulled the Mighty Macs to 24-23. Layne Morgan's free ball off the rally on the ensuing serve, found its way to an open space and give the Griffins the hard-earned sweep.
