Volleyball Splits Two At Trimatch

School and personal records broken vs. Brandywine

WILKES-BARRE, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy went 1-1 on Saturday in a tri-match with Penn State-Brandywine and King's. The Griffins took down the Lions, 3-1, in the day's first match but fell to the host Monarchs, 3-0.

Against Brandywine, Liz Schule and Madelyn Mosser totaled 28 of the team's 49 kills. Schule totaled a career-high 13 enders while Mosser racked up a match-high 15.

Also in the match, Cait Saalfrank broke her own school single-game dig record, as the sophomore registered 44 in the four-set contest. Her previous mark was 32 in a five-set match at Cairn last year. Saalfrank also kicked in five aces.

The team averaged double digits in kills in all four sets. In the second, the set featured 15 ties and four lead changes. The Griffins lead 25-24 after a kill from Mosser, but Brandywine notched the next three points in a row to even things up at 1-1. After cruising to a 25-11 win in set three, the Griffins never trailed in the fourth, to outlast the Lions and lock up the win.

Against King's, GMercyU could only total 24 kills, with Schule leading the pack with six. The Monarchs closed out set one with four-straight points for a 25-17 win. In the second, the Griffins had trouble finding their groove, falling behind 9-3, and playing from behind.

Rachel Miller totaled a match-high 11 kills for King's (6-0).

The Monarchs defeated Penn State-Brandywine in the day's other match.

The team returns home to square off with Cairn here at The Griffin Complex on Tuesday night starting at 7 p.m.
