GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy put together key runs in each set to go on and defeat Penn State-Abington, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-18), in the Griffin's home opener Wednesday night.
GMercyU took control of the first set with an 8-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. Three of those points came on service aces from
Cait Saalfrank. She finished the night with match-highs in aces (four) and digs (14) from her libero spot. Abington pulled to within 14-14 and force a Gwynedd Mercy timeout. After the stoppage, the Griffins rolled off six points in a row to stay ahead for good and take a 1-0 lead.
Madelyn Mosser posted three of her team-high six kills in the second set, to which Gwynedd trailed only once (0-1). Her third ender was the cap on a 25-18 win in set two.
In the third set, the Griffins found themselves down 11-6, but Mosser's kill and two aces from
Kerry McGlinn was part of a 5-0 run to knot things up. Three-straight kills from
Brittany Albert was a big part of a 5-2 spurt to put give Gwynedd the lead they would not relinquish.
For the night, the team posted a 21-14-85 hitting line (.082). They would take advantage of the Lions' 28 attack errors and 14 service errors.
Andia Anderson led Abington (2-3) with a match-high eight kills. Courtney Schwar added 12 assists and four kills.
Kerry McGlinn added 12 digs and three kills for GMercyU (2-3). Albert finished the night with four kills while
Bridget McTamney kicked in 11 assists and eight digs.
The Griffins are back at it this weekend in a tri-match at King's.
