Men's Lacrosse Muscles Past Marywood

SCRANTON, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Lacrosse Team traveled to Scranton to faceoff with Marywood and returned home with a big 7-5 CSAC win. The victory marks the third-straight road win and fifth victory in a row.

For the third game in as many, Ryan Simpson was the top Griffin scorer, netting three goals, including a late tally in the fourth quarter to give GMercyU some insurance.

Kohler Setley contributed a goal and an assist while Jacob Snavely, Dominic Moscariello, Derek Alcavage also found the back of the net for the Griffins (7-2, 4-0 CSAC).

Goalie Chris Burns recorded 12 saves, Joey Giordano won 9-of-14 faceoffs, and the team was good on 13 of its 14 clearing attempts.

The Pacers made 1-0 early in the first when Rob Maini scored the first of his two on the day. Setley set up Simpson later in the frame to knot things up at 1-1. Heading into the second, both teams traded early goals. After Maini was called for a tripping penalty, the Griffins pounced on their man-up opportunity and put one in courtesy of Snavely, who totaled his tenth career man-up score, putting him in a tie for fifth place all-time.

In the third, Simpson and Moscariello were the only goal scorers in the quarter, to help GMercyU up its lead to 5-2. Once again, the teams swapped goals in the early stages of the fourth before Maini added his second with 7:15 left. Marywood capitalized on a Griffin penalty less than a minute later to get within one.

Giordano won the ensuing faceoff, helping the Griffins set up for Simpson's team-leading 21st goal with 3:31 remaining to give the team some breathing room. Burns and the Gwynedd defense saw just one shot the rest of the way as the team moved to 4-0 away from home this year.

Simpson led the team in groundballs with four. Snavely, Moscariello, Giordano, and Philip Weis all had three each.

The squad returns home on Wednesday to square off with nationally-ranked Cabrini in a matchup of CSAC unbeatens. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
