Griffins Clamp Down In Win Over DeSales

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy came away with a 6-2 non-conference win over DeSales Saturday afternoon.

Ryan Simpson netted three goals for his seventh career hat trick while goalie Chris Burns made four of his 11 saves in the fourth quarter as the Griffins did not yield a goal in the first half.

GMercyU (3-2) went ahead 1-0 at the 8:38 mark of the first as Ryan Gartenmyer scored his first of the season off an assist from Kohler Setley. Four minutes later, Simpson worked his way from behind the cage to add to the lead. In the second, Eric Thomas made it 3-0 with his first tally of the year with an assist from Daniel Decker. Gwynedd took the three-goal lead into the half.

The Bulldogs (1-4) struck early in the third on a score from Joe Neggia. Later in the frame, the Griffins were able to kill off two penalties to keep their lead. After DeSales was called for a slash, Jacob Snavely cashed in with a man-up goal with 3:07 left in the quarter. The goal was the senior's eighth career man-up tally.

Burns and the Griffin defense took care of the rest, limiting DeSales to 23 shots, while forcing eight second-half turnovers.

Joey Giordano controlled the X, winning 9-of-11 faceoffs on the day and leading the team with three groundballs.

Matt Barry recorded six saves for the Bulldogs (1-4).

Gwynedd Mercy hits the road when they travel to Haverford on Wednesday, March 21 in a rescheduled contest at Haverford with a 4:30 p.m. start.
