GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Lacrosse team opened up Colonial States Athletic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon scoring four unanswered goals in the fourth period to on and defeat Centenary University, 7-4.
Jacob Snavely and
Joe Simpson added a pair of goals while
Ryan Simpson added a pair of assists and a tally.
The Griffins opened up the scoring with 7:41 remaining in the first period when
Ryan Simpson scored on an assist from
Eric Thomas. However the Cyclones would respond to close out the period with exactly one minute remaining in the frame on an unassisted tally by Nolan Gottshall.
Gottshall would answer again fifty-eight seconds into the second to put Centenary ahead 2-1. Despite trailing, the Griffins kept the offensive attack but found themselves unlucky hitting two crossbars. The Gwynedd defense burned off two penalties to yield an offensive press from Centenary. In the closing moments of the half, goalie
Chris Burns would keep the deficit at one with a save at point blank range before time expired.
Snavely would tie the game at 2-2 on an assist from
Ryan Simpson with just under ten minutes remaining in the third stanza. The Cyclones however would capitalize on a man-up advantage and retake the lead (3-2) when Chris Howell scored on an assist from Chris Snow with less than four minutes in the period. Trailing by a goal, GMercyU would then knot the game up at 3-3 when
Joe Simpson would find the back of the cage assisted by
Kohler Setley with just forty six seconds remaining. The teams would head into the fourth all squared.
The Griffins would retake the lead with just over ten minutes remaining in the fourth when Setley finished the eventual game winner on a pass from
Daniel Decker. A minute and thirty two seconds later
Joe Simpson would add his second tally of the game this time from
Jordan Dzierzgowski to put GMercyU ahead 5-3. Gwynedd would keep their foot on the pedal when Snavely would connect on his second of the game assisted by
Ryan Simpson on a man-up advantage. Dzierzgowski would add the team's fourth goal of the frame (7-3) unassisted with 4:21 remaining.
Centenary would not go away quietly when Gottshall scored his third of the game, but that would be as close as they could get.
For the game, the Griffins held a 37-23 shooting advantage. GMercyU was also a perfect 12-of-12 on clears and held a 16-8 groundball advantage.
Joey Giordano picked up a team high five groundballs.
Burns finished with eight saves while Centenary's Wayne Safreed recorded 11.
The Griffins return back to CSAC action traveling to Immaculata on April 4th at 4 p.m.
