Men's Lacrosse Can't Cage Lions

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Visiting Albright held Gwynedd Mercy without a goal over the final 17:22 of play to go on and hand the Griffins an 8-3 decision Wednesday afternoon.

Ryan Simpson scored twice for GMercyU (2-2) while Daniel Decker's lone tally in the third, however, would be the final goal. The Lions added a score in the third and three more in the fourth to account for the goal scoring.

Simpson used some nifty moves for some space to fire one past Albright goalie Ryan Aler early in the contest for a 1-0 lead. Brandon Hall got Albright (2-4) on the board late in the first where it stood tied at 1-1 after one.

To start the second quarter, Albright was penalized for an illegal stick, giving the Griffins a three-minute man-up spot, but could not convert. Simpson, though, did put in his second on the day at the 10:28 mark for a 2-1 lead. The Lions would take the lead with two quick back-to-back goals 33 seconds apart. James Gorman set up Ethan Gain at the 8:15 mark then Gorman added an unassisted score with 7:42 in the quarter, which remained until the half.

Gain scored his second in the third (8:13) before Decker was set up by Ryan Gartenmeyer with a nice feed in front for his second score on the season and more importantly, get Gwynedd back to a one-goal game.

Conor Graser scored off a clear just over a minute later to swing the momentum. Albright took a 5-3 lead into the final 15 minutes. Gorman would net two of the three goals in the fourth to account for the scoring.

Shawn Ryan led the team with four groundballs. Anthony Pozsonyi added a pair of caused turnovers. Goalie Chris Burns tied a career high with 15 saves, seven of which came in the third. Aler finished with seven for Albright.

The Griffins aim to right the ship on Saturday as DeSales visits for a non-conference clash starting at noon.
