MADISON, N.J. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Lacrosse team got their 2018 season off to a great start, notching a 10-5 victory at Drew University on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Jacob Snavely led the offensive attack with four goals while junior
Ryan Simpson added three.
Kohler Setley would add four assists on the afternoon while
Joe Simpson chipped a pair goals and
Luke Xanthopoulos tally rounded out the scoring, as GMercyU converted on three of five man-up opportunities.
After an early goal from the Rangers, Snavely put in two goals in just over a three-minute span. Xanthopoulos would follow for the 3-1 edge with his unassisted goal at the 6:29 mark for a two-goal lead after the first fifteen minutes.
Drew would answer early in the second period with a pair of goals, the second tying the game at 3-3 with 9:20 remaining in the half. The Griffins responded with a three-goal spurt in the final 3:29 of the quarter when
Ryan Simpson netted a man-up tally with an assist from Setley followed by two scores from
Joe Simpson, last coming with just nineteen seconds remaining before the break for the 6-3 halftime edge.
Gwynedd scored three times in the third and opened the fourth with a score in total to make it seven in a row, breaking open that 3-3 tie into a 10-3 advantage.
The Griffin defense kept the Rangers off the scoreboard for over 30 minutes of game time, much in part to 12 saves from goalie
Chris Burns who was one save shy of tying a career-high. Burns, as well as
Joey Giordano, picked up a team-high six groundballs.
Gwynedd Mercy held the groundball advantage, 29-24, and was also 13-of-15 on clear attempts. The team won the faceoff battle, winning 12-of-19. Giordano was 11-of-14 in the circle.
The defense forced 13 Drew turnovers and held the Rangers to 0-of-6 in extra man opportunities.
GMercyU returns back to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Lycoming College in the home opener.
