Griffins Knock Off Knights, Key In On Playoff Seed

ASTON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy, who is ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Regional rankings, scored a thrilling 81-79 Colonial States Athletic Conference victory at Neumann on Wednesday evening to capture a CSAC First-Round Playoff Bye in the process as one of the top two seeds.

Will Davis led the Griffins with a game-high 26 points and 10 rebounds for the senior's fifth double-double of the season. Courtney Cubbage added 21 with 13 coming in the second half alone.  Rich Dunham rounded out the scoring with 10 points and a team-high six assists

The win also records a regular season sweep over the Knights, the Griffins' first since the 2012-13 season.

Trailing early 10-8, the Griffins would retake the lead 12-10 on a Courtney Cubbage layup with 14:39 remaining in the first half. Following the second tie of the period, GMercyU went ahead for the game's sixth lead change, (14-12) on a Davis layup and control the lead throughout the remainder of the stanza. Holding a two point lead (22-20), the Griffins held Neumann scoreless for the next three minutes, stretching their advantage to 27-20 with a Matt Carter triple and Cubbage bucket with 6:42 remaining.

Gwynedd would continue to add to their lead growing it to nine (34-25) with 2:06 showing on the clock off a Manny Lopez three pointer. The Knights cut into the lead but a pair of free throws from Davis gave the Griffins a 36-31 lead heading into intermission.

A Jeff Seigafuse three at the 11:50 mark of the second half would give the Griffins their largest lead of the stanza (53-46). Despite holding the lead, Neumann crept back in the contest, and took a 58-55 lead with just under nine minutes left. A Davis three jumpstarted a 16-2 run that saw Cubbage score ten points, putting GM ahead, 71-60, with 4:41 remaining. A Dunham Layup and free throw kept the Griffins ahead with 2:12 remaining.

Neumann would not go away, and tied the game for the sixth time at 74-74 with just under two minutes to go. Davis then converted the biggest play of the game, collecting four offensive rebounds in the same possession, the final turning into an old fashioned three-point play (77-74) with just over a minute remaining. Davis then shined on the defensive end of the floor, coming up with a big steal on the Knights' next offensive possession. His floater in the lane put GMercyU up five (79-74).

The Griffins however could only hit in 2-of-6 from the free throw line down the stretch but were able hold a 81-79 lead with 5.9 seconds remaining. Neumann would have a pair of looks but were unable to tie the contest.

After starting the first half (16-of-32), the Griffins would finish (46.5%) on 33-of-71 shooting from the field.

Neumann would out-rebound Gwynedd 39-38 but were held to (44.4%) shooting 28-of-63 from the floor. Raquann Brown-Johnson led all scorers with 25 points for the Knights. Teammate Aaron Johnson-Chavis added 19 points and 18 rebounds.

The Griffins return home on Saturday to celebrate Senior Day against Centenary at 3 p.m. in the regular season finale. The team will honor its four seniors: Davis, Rip Engel, Manny Lopez and Chris Lopez.
