Griffins Celebrate Seniors In Victory Over Centenary

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Griffins reached 20 wins for the third year in a row as Gwynedd Mercy ended the regular season with a 72-58 CSAC victory over Centenary on Senior Day.

Prior to the contest, the team took time to recognize their four seniors; Will Davis, Rip Engel, Chris Lopez, and Manny Lopez.

All four had a hand in the third-straight win for GMercyU (20-5, 15-3 CSAC). A key 10-0 run late in the second half helped turn a 55-49 lead into a double-figure advantage.

The Griffins now move on to the CSAC Tournament, where they enter as the #2 seed and earn a first-round bye. Gwynedd will host a semifinal contest here at The Griffin Complex on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Davis totaled 14 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and two assists. Engel handed out seven assists while Chris Lopez chipped in five points and four rebounds. Manny Lopez added six points, three boards, a block and a steal.

After Gwynedd built an 8-2 lead early on, the Cyclones rattled off seven-straight points capped by a three-pointer from Michael Young to grab a one-point lead. Back-to-back three's from Matt Carter and Rich Dunham helped to restore the edge. Despite shooting over 40% in the first half and holding Centenary to just 30%, the Cyclones were able to get a buzzer-beating basket from Greg Robinson to make it a five-point contest (33-28) at the half.

Davis, Dunham, and Courtney Cubbage all scored in a 7-0 run to open the second half. The lead would grow to 51-36 with 12 minutes to play after a Davis leaner in the paint.

Chris LaBelle's three-pointer was the ending of a 13-4 run by the Cyclones to pull within 55-49 with just over eight minutes to go. Dunham came alive to score six of the next 10 points in a game-changing 10-0 swing over the next four minutes to restore a double-digit lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Dunham finished with a team-high 17 points while adding six assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Cubbage hit for 10 points and Carter kicked in nine.

Young hit three of Centenary's seven three pointers to finish with 17 points. LaBelle had 14 with Robinson scoring nine.

The team shot a strong 18-for-30 (60%) in the second half while scoring 44 of their 78 points in the paint.
