Griffins Toppled By Widener In Title Game

2018 Widener Tip-Off Tournament For Autism Awareness

CHESTER, PA. -- In the championship game of the 2018 Widener Autism Awareness Tip-Off Tournament, Gwynedd Mercy was on the wrong side of a 78-76 decision to the host Pride Saturday afternoon.

Rich Dunham netted 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, both game highs, along with four assists and two steals as the junior was named to the all-tournament team. Jeff Seigafuse added 16 points and Clayton Wolfe kicked in 15.

Jared Peters scored 15 points as he was one of five players to finish in double figures for Widener.

After shooting 34% in the first half trailing 32-28 at the break, GMercyU came out in the second and turned in a 51% performance. However, the Pride responded with 60% effort to counter the Griffin offense.

A three-pointer from Peters put Gwynedd in their largest deficit of the contest (52-40) with 13 minutes to go, but Gwynedd roared back. A big dunk from Matt Sommers off a turnover put the cap on an even bigger 20-6 run to give the Griffins a 60-58 advantage with 7:46 remaining. The teams traded leads but Widener held a three-point edge after two Peters free throws with seven ticks left. GMercyU pulled within one point twice in the final moments but was unable to get the go-ahead bucket.

The team heads to Glenside on Tuesday to face off with Arcadia in the third annual Battle of 309.
