HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Basketball team opened up the 2018-19 season with a 80-62 road victory at Centenary University on Saturday afternoon.
The Griffins were led by four players in double figures;
Courtney Cubbage (14),
Rich Dunham (14),
Jeff Seigafuse (10) and
Donaven Spencer (10). Dunham set a single-game program record with nine steals.
GMercyU jumped out to an early 14-5 lead thanks to a Cubbage bucket. The Griffins continued to grow the lead to fourteen (21-7) with a Seigafuse triple with just over twelve minutes remaining in the half. Trailing 32-14, Centenary would answer with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to ten (32-22), but Gwynedd responded with a Spencer putback to spark a 13-5 run to close the half. A three-point play from Cubbage to bookend the spurt put GMercyU up 46-27 at the break.
Gwynedd stretched their lead to 57-33 (15:01) as
Matt Sommers hit for two. The lead would grow to 67-40 with just under ten minutes remaining with a Jaye'ln Peebles floater and
Somah Slewion layup. Dunham gave the team its largest lead of the contest (73-40) with 8:24 to play.
Centenary was led by a game-high 16 points from Chris LaBelle. Â
GMercyU returns back to action on Tuesday night hosting Goucher College in the home opener starting at 8 p.m.
