GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Marywood outlasted Gwynedd Mercy in five sets in an Atlantic East Conference thriller, as the Griffins fell 25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 25-18, and 19-17 in the final home match of the season on Senior Night.
GMercyU had a 2-1 lead in sets and faced match point on four occasions in the fifth, but were unable to ice the contest and pick up their first league win. The close contest featured 30 ties and 12 lead changes.
Before the match, the team and coaching staff took time to honor the team's two seniors,
Cassie McCarney and
Brittany Albert, along with their families (much to Brittany's surprise!).
Madelyn Mosser tied a career high with 15 kills to lead the Griffins and added 13 digs for her third double double on the year.
Liz Schule added 12 as the team totaled a 49-26-196 (.117) hitting line on the evening. McCarney finished the night with seven kills, four digs and a pair of aces. Albert contributed four kills and five digs.
Sam Compton posted 20 kills and Mikayla Attwood kicked in 19 for the Pacers.
A 10-2 Marywood run in the first set helped key a 1-0 lead. In the second, the Griffins put together 13 kills and just two errors in battling through a 20-20 score to win 25-21 on an ace from McCarney.
Gwynedd ignited a 9-2 spurt in the third to turn a 10-8 deficit into a five-point lead and a Marywood timeout. Again, they fought through a 20-20 score getting a pair of kills from Mosser and the ender from Albert to go up 2-1.
The fourth set got off to a rocky start as Marywood jumped out, 5-0, on three kills and a pair of aces. The team clawed their way back to lead 8-7 but saw the Pacers go on a run of their own, a 7-0 run and not trail the rest of the way to force a fifth and deciding set.
In that fifth set, a 4-4 score turned into a 7-4 Marywood lead, forcing a Gwynedd timeout. Now down 12-9, GMercyU pieced together a 4-0 spurt, this time making the Pacers call a timeout. Despite four chances to close it out in the final set, Gwynedd could not put Marywood away.
The Griffins close out the regular season on Wednesday when they head to Immaculata needing a win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. On Friday, they'll play at Valley Forge in a non-conference matchup.
