GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy looked to force a fifth and deciding set, but their comeback bid came up a bit short in a 3-1 defeat (25-20,25-13,21-25,25-20) to Neumann in an Atlantic East Conference Match Tuesday evening at The Griffin Complex.
Down 2-0, the Griffins battled ahead in the third to build an 18-10 lead. They would fight off a late Neumann push to turn things to the fourth set. In that fourth set, the Knights ran out to a 10-1 lead, only to see GMercyU rally to tie the set up at 18-18. Unfortunately, Neumann scored seven of the next nine points to close out the match.
As a team, the Griffins served up 13 aces, third most this season.
Liz Schule and
Madelyn Mosser each had four while
Bridget McTamney had three. Mosser led the team with 10 kills while
Cait Saalfrank totaled 15 digs.
For the Knights, Melanie Malseed led the team with 19 kills and 14 digs. Teammate Rachael Hoffman chipped in eight enders and totaled five blocks (three solo).
Gwynedd hit an impressive 14-2-37 (.324) in the third set en route to a 33-20-133 (.098) team effort. Neumann posted a 54-19-124 (.282) hitting line.
The Griffins will host Marywood on Thursday on Senior Night starting at 7 p.m. in the final regular-season home match.
