Cabrini Snaps Griffin Win Streak

RADNOR, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy Men's Basketball team fell on the road at Cabrini in a Colonial States Athletic Conference tilt Wednesday evening, 92-88, to snap the Griffins' seven game winning streak.

Rich Dunham posted a career-high 31 points for the Griffins as the sophomore was 10-of-15 from the field and made ten free throws on the evening. Will Davis (16) and Rip Engel (10) rounded out the GMercyU double-digit scoring as the team battled back from a 12-point second half deficit to take a one-point lead with 4:33 in the contest.

The Griffins opened their scoring with a 10-0 run to answer an early Cabrini three pointer. Gwynedd would take their largest lead of the half at 12-5 with a Dunham Jumper at the 14:42 mark. Holding onto the lead (14-11) after a Courtney Cubbage bucket in the paint, the Cavaliers would counter with a 7-0 spurt to re-take the lead at 18-14. A pair of three pointers from Engel and Ty Jones would end the run and give Gwynedd a 20-18 lead just over halfway through the stanza. Cabrini would regain the lead with another seven-point string to go ahead five (25-20).

Still trailing by five, the Griffins knotted the game up at 30-30 following a Dunham drive and another Engel triple with 6:31 remaining. The Cavaliers would again take momentum stretching their lead to ten twice in the closing moments of the half. A Dunham drive would cut into the deficit to trail 49-40 at the break.
Back-to-back Davis layups to start the second half cut the lead to just five (49-44). Cabrini however put together another 7-0 run, their third of the game, to stretch the lead to twelve (56-44), their largest of the night.

A Dunham old fashioned three-point play ignited a 10-0 run. Later, a Matt Carter three to beat the shot clock and a pair of buckets from Dunham highlighted by a steal and dunk to close out the run cut the lead to 56-54 with 14:22 remaining. The Cavaliers would answer yet again, extending their lead to nine five times throughout the stanza with the last coming at 81-72 with 6:52 left.

Not going away quietly, the Griffins would spark their second 10-0 run of the game started by Matt Sommers connecting on a pair of free throws, followed by another Dunham three point play to force a Cabrini timeout. Following the timeout, Chris Lopez would knock down a three pointer and an Engel drive would give Gwynedd an 82-81 lead, their first since the first half, with 4:33 in the contest.

Cabrini would retake the lead with a Tyheim Monroe three-point play and then stretch the score back to five (87-82). A Davis put back and Dunham three with under a minute remaining cut into the lead to two (89-87) but Monroe would ice the game making three free throws in the closing moments for the 92-88 victory.

For the game the Griffins shot 31-of-66 (47%) from the floor making 11 team three pointers.

Cabrini posted four scorers in double figures led by Anthony Wright-Downing with 23 points, Monroe added 18. The Cavaliers shot (53.1%) 34-of-64 from the field making 13 team three pointers.

Gwynedd held the glass out-rebounding Cabrini 35-34. Sommers led the Griffins with seven rebounds and eight points.

The Griffins will return to action on Saturday in the first annual CUNYAC vs CSAC Challenge at Lehman College at 1 p.m.
