BRONX, N.Y. -- Gwynedd Mercy suffered an 85-68 defeat to Lehman in the first-ever CSAC-CUNYAC Challenge on Saturday.
Will Davis netted 14 points for the Griffins (16-4) with
Rip Engel scoring 13 and
Courtney Cubbage 11, respectively.
The CSAC-CUNY Challenge pits schools against each other out of the Atlantic Region based on their respective conference standings as of late-January. Today's other matchups included Staten Island at Cabrini, Neumann at Hunter, Baruch at Rosemont, Marywood at York (N.Y.), John Jay at Immaculata, Keystone at Medgar Evers, Brooklyn at Cairn, and CCNY at Centenary.
Luis Hernandez led the Lightning (18-4) with a game-high 21 points. Mylo Mitchell kicked in 19, Andrew Utate added 15, and Jean Marchial scored 11. Lehman put together an 11-2 run midway in the second half to turn a three-point game into a double-figure deficit the Griffins could not climb out of.
Gwynedd led for over 18 minutes in the first half and had their largest lead of the stanza after a three-pointer from
Matt Sommers for a 32-22 lead late in the frame. Lehman roared back with a 14-2 run to end the half, capped by a buzzer-beating layup from Mitchell.
In that first 20 minutes, the Griffins shot over 43%, while limiting the Lightning to 39% from the floor.
The lead stayed within arm's reach in the second getting to within 52-49 with 12:52 remaining after Cubbage drove the lane for two. From there, Marcial connected on his only three of the game to start Lehman's game-changing scoring spurt. Davis' bucket got it to ten (69-59) with just over six minutes to play, but it would be as close as the Griffins could get the rest of the way.
Davis led the squad with seven rebounds and Engel kicked out six assists. The team shot over 43% for the game while hitting eight three-pointers, six of which were in the first half.
Gwynedd Mercy aims to rebound when they welcome Clarks Summit on Wednesday evening in a CSAC contest slated for 8 p.m.
