GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy's win streak stretched to seven with an 81-67 Colonial States Athletic Conference win over visiting Cairn Saturday afternoon at The Griffin Complex.
Freshman
Matt Carter drained five of the team's 12 three-pointers on the day to finish with a season-high 19 points for GMercyU (16-2, 11-1 CSAC).
Will Davis kicked in 16 and
Rip Engel added 12 as the Griffins led from start to finish. Engel also doled out seven assists while
Matt Sommers handed out six.
Seth Brunner led the Highlanders (5-13, 2-11 CSAC) with 18 points, connecting on five of the team's eight three's on the day. Jordan Koczman added 14 points and seven boards with Malachi Hall totaling nine points and a game-high eight assists.
After Gwynedd jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start things off, Cairn netted six-straight points of their own. A three from
Chris Lopez at the 13:42 mark put the Griffins in the lead for good. Later an 8-0 swing increased the lead into double figures. The Highlanders used three free throws from Josh Decker and a bucket from Hall to get it to a 25-16 contest with 7:38 in the stanza, but back-to-back triples from Carter and Sommers helped to widen the lead. Behind six first-half three's and a 51% shooting effort, Gwynedd held a 45-33 lead at halftime.
The two teams traded baskets throughout the second before Carter would dial up two trifectas as part of a 10-0 run to help give the team its largest lead of the contest (81-58) with 3:19 to play.
Carter hit 7-of-12 from the field and 5-of-9 from behind the arc. The rookie also snared five boards.
Gwynedd Mercy too advantage of 16 Cairn turnovers to score 23 points.
The team returns to action on Wednesday when they head to Radnor, Pa. to square off with Cabrini in a matchup of the top two teams in the conference.
