LANGHORNE, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy shot 65% in the second half to pull away from Cairn as the Griffins posted a 78-68 win over the Highlanders Saturday afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup.
GMercyU led 35-31 at the half, after going 13-of-32 (40%) in the first 20 minutes. Six of those field goals were three-pointers and were part of a half that saw 10 lead changes and 5 ties.
Will Davis led the offense with 24 points while
Rip Engel netted 14 and
Rich Dunham added 13 for Gwynedd (11-2, 6-1 CSAC).
The Griffins opened that second half on a 23-8 run capped by Engel feeding Dunham off a steal for a 58-39 lead at the 12:18 mark. The lead grew to as much as 20 on several occasions in the stanza, the last coming on Davis' bucket with 3:06 remaining (75-55). Cairn (4-8, 2-6 CSAC) whittled the deficit to nine (75-66) in the final minute, but GMercyU hit their free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Engel also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds while adding five assists and three steals. Dunham chipped in four dimes and two steals. For the game, the Griffins shot 52% and took advantage of 11 Cairn turnovers, scoring 21 points.
Antoine Nunnally had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Cairn, while teammate Malachi Hall paced the Highlanders with a team-high 17 points.
Gwynedd Mercy returns home to face off with Keystone on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
