Griffins Outduel Immaculata For Fourth Win In A Row

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Behind five players in double figures, Gwynedd Mercy shot over 50% for the third-straight game to take down Immaculata, 95-89, in a Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup at The Griffin Complex.

The win avenges a one-point loss at the Mighty Macs two weeks ago that gave GMercyU its first conference defeat.

Matt Sommers led the offense, going for 19 points on five three-pointers and a career-high seven rebounds. Chris Lopez added a personal-best 17 points and six assists. Rip Engel (15 points), Matt Carter (14) and Rich Dunham (10) added to the double-digit attack.

Dunham added nine rebounds and nine assists, both career highs for Gwynedd (13-2, 8-1 CSAC) as he nearly recorded a triple-double.

Gwynedd as a team hit on 13 three's, while the Mighty Macs connected on 12, as a total of 25 trifectas were made on the day. It marked the sixth game this season the Griffins connected on 10 or more three pointers in a game.

Dunham scored six-straight points early in the first to give Gwynedd a 16-6 edge. Later in the stanza in a span of just over a minute and a half, Carter connected on three triples in a row, but the two teams would trade long-range daggers to keep it a 10-point game.

Jeff Seigafuse stole a pass at midcourt and squared up for a three, but Immaculata answered with a three from Andre Allen.  Sommers hit his fourth trey of the half to send the team up 44-33 at the break.

Gwynedd continued to sink baskets in the second, stretching their lead to as much as 21 after, you guessed it, another three from Sommers, with 13 minutes to go in the game. Allen sank four of his game-high six triples in the second stanza to slowly pull the Mighty Macs (7-8, 4-5 CSAC) back into the contest. Will Davis got the Griffins back on the board with a layup, but the Macs used an 8-2 spurt to get to 82-71 with 2:39 to go. A three from Asa Kitchen followed by a backdoor layup from Jordan Ambrose, and suddenly IU got within 88-80 with just a minute in regulation. Allen hit his last three of the game with 23 ticks to get within seven (93-86), but Carter nailed both attempts at the free-throw line to open up the lead. A three at the buzzer from IU would account for the 95-89 final.

Allen led all scorers with 28 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Ambrose added 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Davis totaled nine points, five rebounds, and a pair of blocks. Jeff Seigafuse kicked in six boards, four dimes, and a steal.

The Griffins return to action this Monday at Keystone in CSAC action.
