Late Goal Propels Griffins Past Panthers For First Win

FERRUM, VA. -- In a back and forth contest, Alfonso Manzo's goal with 1:09 left in the game was the difference as Gwynedd Mercy notched its first win on the year with a 7-6 victory at Ferrum Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 5-4 entering the fourth quarter, the Griffins (1-1) netted three scores in the stanza. Dominic Moscariello added his second on the day at the 9:11 mark before assisting on Manzo's eventual game winner. The Panthers would win the ensuing faceoff and set up for a final scoring chance, but Gwynedd goalie Sean Myers helped cement the score with a save in the final seconds.

Moscariello finished the day with four points, notching two goals and two assists. Jacob Snavely also notched a pair of goals while Manzo and Jordan Dzierzgowski added a goal and a helper.

Ferrum (1-3) was the first to draw blood late in the first, but Dzierzgowski put GMercyU on the board with 1:42 in the quarter on his first tally of the season. The Panthers added a goal at the end of the period for a 2-1 lead.

Moscariello set up Ryan Simpson for the second quarter's only score as the teams went into halftime tied at 2-2.

After just three shots in the first quarter, Gwynedd tallied double-digit totals in each stanza to outshoot the Panthers, 34-23. The team also won the groundball battle, 21-18, with Marc Bushong collecting a game-high five. Joe Simpson would go 9-for-15 on faceoffs and the team went a perfect 14-for-14 on clears.

Kyle Lister led Ferrum with three goals while goalie Zach Bell made six stops. Myers finished the day with five.

The Griffins welcome Haverford on Wednesday in the home opener with a 1 p.m. start.
