HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- Centenary's Nolan Gotshall scored 1:35 into the second overtime as Gwynedd Mercy suffered a 7-6 defeat to the Cyclones in both team's Colonial States Athletic Conference openers on Saturday.
Jacob Snavely tied a career-high with four points, totaling a team-high three goals and adding an assist for GMercyU (2-5, 0-1 CSAC).
Ryan Simpson added a pair and
Jordan Dzierzgowski contributed a score and a helper on the day.
Gotshall had three goals for Centenary, all coming after halftime. Teammate Luke Tremont registered a goal and an assist.
Tremont gave Centenary (4-1, 1-0 CSAC) a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Griffins quickly countered, netting two goals in the final 18 seconds of the stanza, exactly 14 second apart. After Snavely's first tally, the Griffins won the faceoff, and transitioned to their offense where Snavely hit Dzierzgowski for a 2-1 lead with four ticks remaining.
The final minute of the second quarter produced two goals from the Griffins and one by Centenary. This time it was Simpson with the quick goal, scoring just eight seconds after Snavely's second tally to stretch the lead to 4-1. And with 16 seconds left before the half, Michael Balsamo got it to 4-2 at the break with his score.
Snavely potted his third on the day 54 seconds into the third for a 5-2 lead. Centenary would rally, and eventually score the next three goals to tie it going into the final quarter. Tremont gave the Cyclones their first lead since early in the game with his man-up tally at the 10:08 mark of the fourth. With time getting short in the contest, Gwynedd took advantage of a Centenary penalty and knotted things up at 6-all on Simpson's second man-up goal in as many games. After a successful clear into their offensive zone, Gwynedd called timeout with just over a minute in regulation to draw up the potential go-ahead goal. Snavely would get a great look at goal number four on the day, but his shot found the post. Centenary would use their own transition to get a final shot off, but Gwynedd goalie
Chris Burns denied the attempt and the teams would head to sudden death.
After a possession for each team in the first overtime, Gwynedd had one last shot but Snavely would be turned away from goalie Chris Cameron.
In the second extra session, the Cyclones won the opening faceoff and called a timeout of their own. Gotshall would end it with his third on the day at the 2:25 mark of the stanza.
Burns finished the day with seven saves while Cameron was credited with 16.
Marc Bushong picked up a team-high five groundballs and added two caused turnovers.
Shawn Ryan kicked in three GB's and two CT's.
It was the ninth overtime game in program history and the first two overtime contest. This was not the longest game in school history however, in 2010, the Griffins and King's played into three overtimes.
Gwynedd Mercy is off until Saturday when they welcome Marywood in CSAC action starting at noon.
