Immaculata Upends Men's Basketball In CSAC Affair

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. --Gwynedd Mercy was held without a field goal over the final 3:55 of the second half as Immaculata snuck away with a 66-60 win over the Griffins Wednesday night at The Griffin Complex in CSAC action.
 
GMercyU (17-5, 11-4 CSAC) led by as much as 12 early in the second and would lead by seven (53-46) with just over seven minutes in the contest.
 
Arron Goodman totaled 16 points and 10 rebounds while Cedric Elleby pulled down a career-high 19 boards while scoring 10 points. Ty Jones netted 13, but Gwynedd shot 25% and committed 11 turnovers in the final 20 minutes to put them in a deficit.
 
Roy Ferrell Jr. led IU (11-11, 9-6 CSAC) with a game-high 22 points, hitting three of the team's six three-pointers. Eric Pittman Jr. and Matt Simon each added 13 apiece.
 
The Griffins looked to break it open in the first, using an 8-2 run capped with a trey from rookie Rich Dunham to take a 19-13 lead midway through the stanza. But Immaculata answered with 11-straight points, all in less than a two-minute span, to reclaim the lead. Again, Gwynedd tried to pull away, this time with a 13-1 spurt highlighted by a bucket and foul from Elleby to help grow the lead to double figures (34-24). GM would lead 36-26 at halftime.
 
Elleby would again strike for a three-point play, getting a putback to fall and with the foul, would put Gwynedd up 49-37 with 12 minutes to go. The Mighty Macs would then outscore the Griffins, 16-7, over the next six minutes to tie things up at 60-60 at the 2:06 mark.
 
Two free throws by Simon on the next possession with 1:22 showing gave IU its first lead of the half. Gwynedd would come up with two consecutive turnovers as IU would hit from the line to up their lead to 64-60. After an IU miss, Jones would be fouled and step to the line, but he would miss the front end of a 1-and-1. The Mighty Macs were able to grab the rebound and push up the floor for a breakaway layup from Pittman to help cement the final score.
 
After shooting 37% in the first half, Gwynedd was 8-for-31 in the second and 0-for-11 from beyond the arc. Immaculata produced a 21-of-67 (31%) shooting clip.
 
Gwynedd Mercy will now turn its attention to Saturday's contest at Keystone.
