Men's Basketball Firing On All Cylinders In Home Finale

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy closed out its home portion of the regular season with a convincing 93-52 win over Clarks Summit Wednesday night at The Griffin Complex.

Arron Goodman scored 20 points and Will Davis added 18 as the Griffins (19-5, 13-4 CSAC) now will play at Cabrini on Saturday in the season finale with the #2 playoff seed and first-round bye at stake. A win would give Gwynedd the second seed and a semifinal game here a week from tonight. A loss cements the team as the #3 seed and will host #6 Centenary here on Monday in a first-round matchup.

Courtney Cubbage (12 points) and Cedric Elleby (11 points) also reached double figures with Ty Jones totaling five assists, four boards, a steal and a block. Jason Cavell dished out a career-high four dimes while Elleby, Rip Engel, Matt Sommers, and Larry Jones III each had three.

John McCloskey netted a game-high 23 points for the Defenders (1-23, 0-17 CSAC), hitting six of the team's nine three-pointers.

Despite shooting over 62% in the first half, the Griffins could not space themselves from Clarks Summit. McCloskey's baseline jumper gave the Defenders a 16-15 edge at the 13:05 mark. Gwynedd would etch out a nine-point lead from there, only to see CSU climb back within27-24 with just under eight minutes in the half.

From there, Gwynedd turned up the heat, and used a 23-3 spurt to close the stanza highlighted by Davis' putback as the buzzer sounded to give GM a 50-27 lead heading into the locker room.

The second half was all Gwynedd, as a total of 12 players would register a point on the night. As a team, GM would shoot a season-best 60% (39-of-64) and connect on eight three-pointers. Rich Dunham sank three longballs with Sommers hitting a pair.

Prior to the game, the team honored its two 1,000-point scorers in Elleby and Goodman and took time to recognize Larry Jones III as he finishes out his senior campaign.
