HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- Gwynedd Mercy shot over 56% for the game and held Centenary to just 17 first-half points as the Griffins picked up a 73-46 Colonial States Athletic Conference victory over the Cyclones Saturday afternoon.
Both the offense and defense were clicking as the Griffins used a 15-0 run to close out the first stanza and took advantage of 17 Centenary turnovers to score 12 points from them and made the most out of their 10 offensive rebounds, scoring 12 second-chance points.
Will Davis finished with a game-high 20 points on 10-of-11 shooting while adding six rebounds and two blocks.
Rip Engel and
Courtney Cubbage each had 14. Engel and
Rich Dunham had top assist honors, as the two dished out six apiece. Cubbage grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double on the season.
Ty Jones kicked in eight points as he and Engel each had a pair of three-pointers. As a team, Gwynedd shot 16-of-27 (59%) in the first half and 17-of-31 (54%) in the second.
Davis' nice feed to Jones gave the Griffins (4-1, 2-0 CSAC) a 26-17 lead with 6:32 to go in the first, but also kickstarted their scoring run. Jones would cap the stretch with his three with just three ticks before the buzzer to give GMercyU a 39-17 lead at the break.
It was more of the same in the second, as Gwynedd held Centenary to one field goal over the final 4:45 of the contest.
Chris Labelle led the Cyclones (1-5, 0-2 CSAC) with 14 points. Larry Joseph chipped in five points, four assists, and four rebounds. Centenary was 6-of-27 (22%) in the first half and 9-of-26 (34%) in the second from the floor.
The Griffins will head to Towson, Md. to take on Goucher on Wednesday night in a 7:30 tip.
