Men's Basketball Scores Win In CSAC Opener

SCRANTON, PA. -- Behind 21 points each from Rip Engel and Will Davis, the Gwynedd Mercy Men's Basketball Team posted an 84-77 win at Marywood in the Griffin's CSAC opener Wednesday evening.

Courtney Cubbage kicked in 19 as GMercyU (3-1, 1-0 CSAC) led from start to finish as the team pulled away in the second half. Davis, who also scored a career-high, was a rebound shy of a double-double, a personal-best nine boards and teammate Rich Dunham added eight points, six rebounds, and six assists.

Thomas Swartz netted a game-high 32 points for the Pacers (3-2, 0-2 CSAC) on 7-of-16 shooting and 16-for-16 at the free throw line.

Davis' bucket in the paint gave Gwynedd their largest lead of the first half (17-7) with 13 minutes in the stanza. Later Dunham hit from downtown on the Griffin's final possession of the half to send the visitors into the locker room with a 35-27 lead.

Swartz, who scored 23 of his 32 points in the second half, put the finishing touches on a three-point play to pull Marywood within three at the 14:55 mark.

The Griffins battled, and inflated their lead into double digits. Dunham would feed Engel off a steal to give Gwynedd a 68-53 lead with 6:21 to play. But back-to-back three's from James Curley and Swartz in the final minute took an 11-point game to an 82-77 contest. Jeff Siegafuse drew a foul on the inbound and sank both free throw attempts with just six ticks left to account for the final score.

In the battle on the glass, Gwynedd Mercy won, 46-36, collecting 19 offensive rebounds that led to 21 second-chance points. The team also took advantage of Marywood's turnovers, scoring 15 points off of 13 mistakes. The Griffins committed just six turnovers on the night.

GMercyU resumes action on Saturday when they head to Centenary in a CSAC clash starting at 4 p.m.
