Late Rally Comes Up Short In Five-Set Thriller

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy looked to rally from two sets down, but it was Cedar Crest outlasting the Griffins in wild 3-2 (22-25, 25-13, 25-16, 23-25, 15-10) CSAC contest Wednesday night at The Griffin Complex.

Abreeanna Bisenius of Gwynedd and Kaliey Elrod of Cedar Crest shared the top kill totals as each recorded 10. Kerry McGlinn totaled 30 assists and 13 digs for her fifth double-double on the season. Rainah Dunham was one kill shy of her first career double double, finishing with nine kills and 13 digs.

For McGlynn, she would go over 1,000 career assists, becoming the sixth player in program history to accomplish the feat.

Devyn Crowder registered 10 digs, eight aces, six assists, four kills and a block for Cedar Crest (13-4, 3-3 CSAC). Steph Barr added 25 assists and 20 digs.

The first set gave an indication of how the evening would go, as both teams battled through 14 ties and eight lead changes. GMercyU closed out the set with six-straight points. After GM led 15-13 and with a timeout from the Falcons, Cedar Crest went on a 7-1 run to take their final lead. Back-to-back kills from Dunham ended the first set with that momentum carrying over to the second as the Griffins raced out to a 7-2 lead. The Falcons then used a 7-0 run to force a Gwynedd timeout. Later, another stretch of points by Cedar Crest, this time an 8-0 spurt keyed a 23-13 win in set #2.

In the third with the score tied at 4-4 early, the Falcons ran off 10 points in a row to build a double-digit lead. Gwynedd battled to get it to a 20-16 score, but Cedar Crest notched the next five to go up 2-1.

Things didn't bode well to start the fourth as again, the Falcons built an 11-2 advantage. Later down, 16-7, Gwynedd found its groove behind the service of Natalie Danze as the team produced an improbable 12-0 run to claim its first lead of the set. Cedar Crest hung around but Liz Schule's kill ended the 25-23 rallying point.

The fifth and deciding set saw each team put together a string of points early on. After clawing back to tie it at 5-5, the Falcons strung out six-straight to stun the Griffins. Gwynedd could not find their footing the rest of the way as they would get as close as 13-10 before Cedar Crest used a kill and an ace to end the five-set thriller.

Gwynedd Mercy travels to Rutgers-Camden on Friday before another road trip on Saturday up to Marywood.
