GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Cabrini snapped Gwynedd Mercy's five-game winning streak as the Griffins fell, 75-70, Monday night in a CSAC contest at The Griffin Complex.
GMercyU (10-3, 4-2 CSAC) looked to battle back from an early 15-point second half deficit. They would battle back to eventually tie it at 65-65 with just over two minutes to go.
Courtney Cubbage racked up his third career double-double and second in as many games totaling 24 points and 16 rebounds, both career highs. He would go 10-for-16 from the floor while adding three assists and a steal.
Arron Goodman added 12 while
Rip Engel totaled 11 points and seven assists.
Both teams were locked in defensively in the first half. Engel's three-pointer pulled the Griffins to 18-15 with eight minutes before the half. But Cabrini (8-4, 4-1 CSAC) countered with a 10-2 run to go up by 11 (28-17). Gwynedd would trail, 40-28, at the break. The Griffins dominated in rebounds by accumulating nine more rebounds than the Cavs in the first half (22-13), but committed 13 turnovers. Cabrini went to the free throw line 18 times in the first 20 minutes, making 15 attempts compared to the Griffin's 3-of-5 result.
The deficit stayed in double figures to open the second before the Griffins came on strong using a 10-0 run over a three-minute span to turn a 13-point hole into a 49-46 contest with 11 minutes to go. A
Will Davis three-point play along with back-to-back buckets from Elleby highlighted the spark.
After Cubbage tied things up the game with two minutes left, Ivan Robinson hit his fourth three of the night. The same sequence repeated itself in the next progression for Cabrini, this time a triple from DeVahnte Mosley gave the Cavs a four-point edge with 55 seconds. Later Cubbage hit another basket with 32 seconds left to bring the Griffins within one. After Cabrini's Ryan Charity hit one of two at the line with 24 ticks on the clock, Gwynedd trailed, 72-70, and looked to tie it or possibly take a lead on their next trip down the court. Dunham's three-point attempt missed and went right into the hands of Tyheim Monroe where he was fouled but just hit one of two at the line for a one possession contest. However, on the inbound, Cubbage was called out of bounds moving the ball upcourt. Robinson would get fouled and hit two at the line with three seconds remaining for a five-point edge.
Robinson led Cabrini with 21 points, sinking four of the team's seven three-pointers. Monroe added 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Mosley totaled 15 points while Charity had 11.
Gwynedd shot 55 (16-of-29) in the second half, but in all committed 21 turnovers, second-most this season. The team would control the glass, holding a 46-21 (+25) rebound edge.
Cedric Elleby had nine points and nine rebounds.
