Clutch Shooting Keys Road Win At Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- Key free-throw shooting in the second half helped enable Gwynedd Mercy to pull away from Centenary, 82-69, Wednesday evening in a CSAC matchup.

Arron Goodman registered 22 points and 11 rebounds and Cedric Elleby had 11 points and 12 boards as the duo recorded double-doubles. Rip Engel (12 points) was one assist shy of making it a third on the night. Courtney Cubbage kicked in 14 points and eight caroms. Elleby also blocked five shots.

The Griffins (11-3, 5-2 CSAC) went 17-of-18 at the charity stripe in the second, a half that saw 18 lead changes and 25 in total, including an 11-of-12 clip down the stretch after they would take the lead for good with just over five minutes remaining in the contest.

Rashaan Spencer had 16 points for the Cyclones (9-4, 4-2 CSAC) while Paul Jones added 15 and Zachary Duymich 11 respectively.

Gwynedd fell behind 7-0 out of the gate, but battled back to take a 12-9 lead after a Goodman jam. Rich Dunham's three-pointer gave GM its largest lead of the half (16-11) with 9:43 before the half. Centenary countered with an 11-4 spurt to take a brief 22-20 lead. A three from Matt Somers, along with a bucket from Manny Lopez and a trifecta from Goodman helped erase a 29-25 deficit. Goodman would strike from downtown again, this time just before the buzzer to send GMercyU up 36-32 at halftime.

A wild second half saw no team lead by more than three over the first 14:51 of the stanza. After a bucket from Goodman and two free throws from Cubbage, Lopez hit a big three with 4:40 left to make it 69-63. That would kickstart a 15-2 run in which Gwynedd held a double-digit edge the rest of the way.

The team outrebounded Centenary, 55-39, marking the sixth-straight game the team held such an advantage. Overall, the Griffins shot a season-best 87.5% at the free-throw line (21-of-24). Cubbage was a perfect 8-for-8 while Goodman was 4-for-4. For Goodman, who has already hit the 1,000 career mark this season, would score his 1,000th point as a Griffin during the contest.

Gwynedd Mercy returns to action on Saturday when they play at Rosemont at 3 p.m.
