PHOENIXVILLE, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy swept Valley Forge in three sets Thursday night to pick up their first win of the 2016 season. Set scores were 25-20, 25-15, 25-18.
The Griffins (1-4) never trailed in the first two sets and would battle back from a five-point deficit in the third with a run of nine-straight points to help pull away for good.
Casey Griffith had the hot hand, registering 16 kills and 18 digs, both match highs. Setter
Kerry McGlinn doled out 23 assists on the night.
GMercyU totaled 10 kills in the first set as they would race out to a 10-3 lead. It would stretch to 16-8 on a kill from
Jessica Behr and later to 22-13. After four-straight points from the Patriots to pull within five (22-17), the Griffins were able to get the ender after three more UVF points, as Behr cemented the 25-20 score with her second kill.
It was more of the same in the second, as Griffith served Gwynedd to an 8-0 edge and later a 13-3 advantage. Her six kills in the frame were too much for the Patriots to handle. She would notch kills in four of the final five points to cap the 25-15 score.
The third set was a different scene as Valley Forge would break open a 11-11 contest with five points in a row. Griffith and Behr would then take control over the next nine Griffin points. Griffith served up three aces while Behr added two and a monster kill to help cap nine-straight points.
The team will head to Penn State-Abington on Saturday in a tri-match with the host Lions and a non-conference match with Centenary.
