MIAMI, FL. -- Gwynedd Mercy got their Florida Trip off to a good start with an 80-61 win over Manhattanville at the HoopMIA Holiday Shootout in Miami.
Cedric Elleby led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, while adding a game-high eight rebounds and three blocks.
Rip Engel hit four of the team's five three-pointers, finishing with 18 points and
Ty Jones went a perfect 10-for-10 at the free throw line to help him total a season-high 14 points.
The Griffins (7-2) used a 10-0 run after falling behind, 3-0, to take a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Later, a 12-2 spurt would give GMercyU its largest lead of the half (40-22), with just over a minute before the break. GM would lead 40-24 at halftime.
In the second half, the lead would swell to as much as 27, after a three from Engel put the Griffins ahead, 68-41, at the 9:31 mark.
Alex Tuci led the Valiants (3-6) with 17 points. Willie Britton kicked in 12, Charles Nardone with 11 and Dwayne Frazier with 10 respectively.
Jones also contributed seven boards and three assists, while Engel handed out four dimes and notched a pair of steals. As a team, Gwynedd, was 27-of-64 (42%) and would outrebound their opponent (45-32) for the seventh time this season.
The Griffins will get right back at it tomorrow, concluding their stay in the Sunshine State when they face Goucher tomorrow at 4 p.m.
